So each weekday after the boys and I finish with breakfast, dishes, teeth-brusing, showering (If I'm lucky - if not it has to wait til the evening when they're asleep!)bed-making, & laundry, we settle into a morning of homeschoolin' here in our little corner of the world.
This trip I brought Skip's two thick Workbooks; Numbers Skills & Letters and Sounds, as well as a couple of pamphlet type Science & History books that have about 25 pages each, his spelling journal, and some thin beginner readers. The rest I get off the net and print out as I need them. For Harry, I brought nothing except for the fat pencils Skip used in Pre-K, knowing I could get what I needed online - and not knowing how he'd take to any kind of structured learning. I just didn't think it was worth the added weight in my suitcases! Plenty of time for that when we got home, I thought...
Well wasn't I wrong about Harry. While sitting and writing isn't his first choice of things to do, he does come around rather quickly, and is always fascinated with what Skip is doing in HIS books. Emphasis on HIS - Skip's. Each day after Harry prints his name, he tries to snag whatever book Skip isn't currently using and claim it as his. Finally, tired of battling, I decided to create a book for Harry.
First thing I did was I picked up a very thin Russian Workbook that says its intended for kids 5 & 6 but I found to be perfect for his level. Next I printed out a dozen or so simple worksheets but similar to the ones in Skip's books. Finally, I added the rest of the sheets I already had printed out for him and stapled all the pages inside the cover of the little workbook, and, Viola!
As you can see, he loves the fact that it's his, and really like completing each page! One of today's pages was matching colored triangular shaped stickers to match a pattern. It was perfect because he recognizes & can point out triangles, and the colors in it! Oh, and most importantly, as he finishes a page, he proudly picks out a sticker and affixes it to the top of the sheet! Progress - big progress!

Call me if you need a sub. ;>
ReplyDeleteI love the sticker book and will look for something similar to take when I get to meed d2b. (Still no clue when or who that will be...)
Now I can really "picture" it all!
ReplyDeleteWish i was there with u guys....
ReplyDeleteWe miss you a whole bunch Poppa! We can't wait to be with you again!
ReplyDeleteOh and Poppa, Mommy makes the gross popcorn (the kind you pop on the stove) and we like your popcorn better (the microwave kind), and we REALLY miss sharing it with you when we watch TV!
ReplyDeleteThe expression on Harry's face is priceless :) How ucky the boys are to have a teacher and mother that is willing to go to these lengths to keep them happy!
ReplyDeletethe look is so amazingly cute
ReplyDeleteI love how you make the most of your time there. You should be granted citizenship by now. I think I told you about this before but if not... www.starfall.com is a great site for preK - 1st or 2nd grade. It's free too! They can practice some of their "schoolin" on line. Also, www.edhelper.com there is a yearly fee but it isn't much. That's more for you to print out work.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! Love Arry's Boo-k!!!!
ReplyDeleteAidan was excited that Skip liked the picture and story, and also to see both the boys doing school! We had hoped to send him to a private school, but that didn't pan out. So he was upset when he first found out he'll be doing home school this fall. He's warmed up to the idea, but this morning when he saw Harry and Skip doing their school work he gained a new appreciation for it and thinks it is just THE coolest thing! =)
Judy,Skip,Harry.....Keep up the good work. You have brought back some happy times in my years of teaching preschoolers.
ReplyDeleteAiden,
ReplyDeleteYou have such a special mommy and I know you are going to have SO much fun with homeschool! And you are such a smart boy, I'm sure that you are going to be such a good student! And just think, soon you'll be helping your brothers with THEIR work!
Oh my goodness you just wear me out with all of that. I have to admit, if I were stuck there, I would be a basket case just bouncing off the walls. You're great! They seem to be having a great time.
ReplyDeleteJudy, your boys are just beautiful! I'm so happy for you. :)
ReplyDeleteYou absolutly amaze me!!!!
ReplyDeleteHey Judy,
ReplyDeleteI noticed that you are using A Beka. Are you doing DVD or Traditional? Are you having them keep track of everything or are you doing it yourself? Just trying to figure out which route I want to go... thought I'd ask. =)
