When Harry first came to the apt. he insisted on bringing all kinds of stuff to bed with him. Cars, figures, flashlights, you name, he’d smuggle it under the pillow. One night – and I kid you not – after he fell asleep & I went to tuck him in, I found:
2 hot wheels cars
2 slightly larger trucks
1 hot wheels motorcycle
a book
a flashlight
8 tiny superhero figures
instruction book from a toy we don’t even have anymore
and last, but not least,
3 – 1” diameter balls.
Now what he intended to do with that is beyond me. The next day we went to the store and got him a small stuffed dog. The first few nights he tried to take the dog & some junk. I told him no and made sure he didn’t. After that, he was happy with his dog. At one point he named it “Ksusha” which is Irina’s daughters name. He absolutely LOVES Ksusha, so the name came as no surprise.
Well lately when it’s bed or rest time, he’ll fly into a panic, asking “G’dye Sabaka?” Meaning, “where’s the dog?” Today when it happened, I handed it to him and asked him (in Russian) what the dogs name was. I hadn’t heard him call the dog Ksusha lately, so I thought maybe it had a new name. Well as soon as I asked him he said without hesitation. “Dog!”
Which brings me to the point of this story… Back home we have a one-eyed Maltese named, “Sabaka” – which is the Russian word for Dog. And here in Russia, Harry has a Sabaka, named dog! Go figure!

ReplyDeleteI love it.
ReplyDeleteI think the toy hoarding might be just to make sure that they're there tomorrow. Now that he knows they will be, Dog is enough. (Ksusha--one of my favorite girls' names--will be relieved that Dog has been re-named!)
Aww! I love that he smuggled stuff under his pillow. What a treasure trove he had going! And I LOVE that your dog back home is Sabaka and his sabaka in Russia is dog! How sweet!!! So encouraging he is picking up English so quickly and so well! Sunday is just a few days away! YAY!!!
ReplyDeleteThat is the sweetest story! I love it! When we were on our second trip, Evan would sneak toys and snacks under his pillow too! Did Skip ever do it? I wonder if it is part of that "this actually belongs to me" thing and "I don't have to share it" HMMM
ReplyDeleteGood lord, i'm surprised that he had enough room to lie down with the contents of a small toybox into the bed. I'm not sure Skip ever really brought quite so many toys into bed with him at one time.... although it's not uncommon to find 10-15 books scattered on the bed and under the covers etc., but he's always loved books, even before he could read any of the words you could find him sitting in bed late at night or early in the morning flippig through the books, appearing to be reading them, lol.... so cute.
ReplyDeleteThat is so funnt that we have a dog named Sabaka and him a"Sabaka" named dog
I agree with Kate - I bet the toy hording thing is because this might have been what he had to do at the orphanage to make sure that no one took 'his' toys. Just breaks my heart!
ReplyDeleteI wonder how he will react to your Sabaka? The one thing I seem to think about all the stinkin' time is how Anya will be with Jazz and Lola (our fur babies). Someone asked me the other day what I would do if Anya didn't like the cats, or if she was allergic to them. I quickly changed the subject :)
