workers was just throwing a HUGE pile of folded boxes into what appears to be the cardboard trash bin. I took two identical ones off the top and carried those home along with our groceries. Skip of course what I wanted them for, and I said ‘What do you mean? They’re toys.” “Oh” he said, clearly not understanding. I left it at that. Within 10 minutes they were just having the best time with the boxes – hiding in them, rocking in them, stacking, etc. Later that nite I took the paints out and told them we were going to turn them into cars. Remembering my Romper Room years (yes, really showing my age here) We painted the side of the boxes to look like a car. Skip did a regular old car, and Harry’s became a police car.
For the last four days they have been running finding more ways than you'd believe, using those boxes!
Last night we added a new dimension. On our way backfrom the grocery store, again, we grabbed a few more boxes. This time we started to build a cardboard house. Since we have few choices for adhesives, it's more than a little crude, but they think it's great. Today we added a few more boxes and started on the roof. They insist it has to have one, so...We only got enough for part of the roof, so tomorrow, you know where we'll be headed.. And then of course they said it HAD to be painted. Again, pretty crude, but it works for them...and for me...and my sanity!

Awesome! What a fantastic idea =)
ReplyDeleteDay after day I continue to be baffled but what you were to accomplish. These cars that you made with the boys are simply amazing. And I know how much fun the had playing with them too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea!
ReplyDeleteBrandi
Ditto the above!
ReplyDeleteThat is cute and a great idea, and SO true. Boyd has a million toys, but all he wants to play with are the non-toy items all over the house. :)
ReplyDeletePlaying with boxes was the best time of my childhood years.
ReplyDeleteawwwwwww so cute!1 hurry home!
ReplyDeleteI can figure out where, in the apt, all the pictures are taken except the one where Skip's on the phone, and harry's playing with an electronic thingy... looks like they enjoyed the boxes, when I spoke to Skip he excitedly told me that you were getting one more piece of cardboard, and the house would be complete
ReplyDeletePopping over from Kathy's blog to send you good wishes. Congratulations on your amazing boys!
ReplyDeleteI think you're going to be sad to leave your box world behind when you go...
I loved Romper Room... :-) Toni above is right - boxes are one of the best things about childhood... at any age! For Anicka's 5th birthday party, I built a box fort out of 12 different boxes, some of them HUGE. I had a great time playing in it - oh, and the kids did, too. I held it together with pipe cleaners by poking 2 holes about an inch apart through both boxes with a meat thermometer. The fort survived the party with flying colors! And these days, the centerpiece in our den is a beautifully decorated refrigerator box I made Vince scavenge from our neighbor's curb. Wonder if you can score one of THOSE in Angarsk!
